Mal de Chagas: una enfermedad de la pobreza
El Mal de Chagas es la principal endemia sanitaria en el noroeste de la Argentina. Más del 50% de las viviendas de las zonas rurales de La Rioja, Santiago del Estero, Chaco y Formosa está infectada por vinchucas. Esta enfermedad está relacionada directamente con la pobreza, por lo que el rol del Estado en el control vectorial y el tratamiento de las personas afectadas se hace imprescindible. Sin embargo, existen graves deficiencias en los programas de prevención, que provocaron que el Mal de Chagas haya avanzado desde fines de la década de 1990.El doctor David Gorla, del Centro de Investigación Científica y de Transferencia Tecnológica de La Rioja, fue entrevistado en Con Ciencia y Trabajo por AM 870 Radio Nacional. Gorla investiga actualmente las características fenotípicas y genotípicas del Triatoma infestans, el principal vector de la enfermedad de Chagas en esta región de América.
